Belles sweep up girls 7A titles
BY TIM COOPER ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE 10-22-08
Rebecca Bailey and Mount St. Mary made winning a state title look easy.
Bailey, a junior at Mount St. Mary, took only 38 minutes to beat Bentonville’s Oksana Hillyer and win the Class 7A girls singles title Tuesday afternoon at Burns Park in North Little Rock while the Belles earned their first state tennis title since 2002.
Mount St. Mary finished with 16 points while runner-up Bentonville totaled 10.
Bailey lost only four games in three matches, and the Belles junior appeared to get stronger with each match. Bailey defeated Little Rock Central's Darby Brandon 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals before handing Hillyer a 6-0, 6-0 defeat.
"I was playing great. I really was," Bailey said. "I was hitting the ball, and it felt really good."ÂÂÂÂ
Bailey's dominance showed early in her match with Hillyer, the 7A-West singles champion. Bailey rarely lost a point and finished off the first set in 15 minutes.
"It's hard to come out of something like that," Bailey said. "But once you get a big lead, you have to keep your composure and keep your eye on the fact that you want to win. The key is to keep the pressure on her and make sure she doesn't get any easy points or anything to allow her to get back in the match. You have to keep stepping on her."
Hillyer, also a junior, advanced to the final with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Karsyn Betts of Rogers.
The Liles sisters were almost as dominate as their teammate. They won their first five games of the first set but trailed 2-1 in the second set before reeling off another five consecutive games for a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Anna Bever and Ardan Brazzeal of Bentonville.
