Playoffs Roundup: Reynolds sweeps regional tennis titles

Bennett Crane won the singles championship, and the team of Jack Riazzi and Nicholas McDaniel won the doubles championship as Reynolds swept the championships Saturday at the Midwest 4-A Regional in Greensboro.
Crane defeated Collin Schick of Greensboro Grimsley 6-4, 6-3 in the final. Kyle Schlanger of Northwest Guilford defeated East Chapel Hill’s Max Smith 6-2, 6-2 for third place.

In doubles, Riazzi and McDaniel defeated Hardy Brown and Naveed Foroudi of Greensboro Page 6-4, 6-3 in the championship. Brown and Foroudi defeated Reynolds’ Nate Rowell and John Kretzschmar 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals, and Rowell and Kretzschmar came back to take third place, defeating East Chapel Hill’s Jack Devonport and Connor Lutz 7-6, 7-5.
All semifinalists qualified for this weekend’s NCHSAA 4-A championships at Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh.

Semis: Jack Riazzi-Nicholas McDaniel (Reynolds) def. Jack Devonport-Connor Lutz (East Chapel Hill) 6-4, 6-3; Hardy Brown-Naveed Foroudi (Greensboro Page) def. Nate Rowell-John Kretzschmar 6-3, 6-3; Final: Riazzi-McDaniel def. Brown-Foroudi 6-4, 6-3; 3rd place: Rowell-Kretzschmar def. Devonport-Lutz 7-6, 7-5.
All semifinalists qualified for this weekend’s NCHSAA 1-A championships in Cary.

On April 22, 2014, Jack Riazzi and Nicholas McDaniel won the High School Central Piedmont Conference in Doubles. In 2013, Nick was the Conference Champion in Singles. He lost in the finals in the Regionals and lost to the winner of the State Championship. His team, RJ Reynolds H.S., lost in the state finals to Millbrook H.S. Nick's high school team was the state Champion three consecutive years: 2012, 2011 and 2010. Nick has been part of the team since his freshman year.
