The team at Scholarship For Athletes talked with Ian Duvenhage, head coach of men's tennis at Vanderbilt University. Duvenhage talks about the recruiting process, what he looks for in players, and his approach to coaching.
Questions and Answers
Scholarship For Athletes (SFA): What advice do you have for junior players that strive to play college tennis?
Ian Duvenhage (ID): Do your homework. There's a wide array of academic institutions, tennis programs, social environments and urban/rural settings. All colleges and tennis programs are not alike therefore there will be some great options and ones that will be less suitable to your needs. A good match between your needs, your value system and the college of your choice is what you're striving for.
SFA: How important is it for potential recruits to build strong relationships with you and the players on your team?
ID: It is invaluable. When things don't work out it is more often due to personality clashes than anything else. For that reason I think the better a recruit gets to know the coach and the players on the team the better the chances of a match made in heaven!
