Top-ranked junior Alexa Glatch (background) was a finalist in the U.S. Open Junior event.
Roger Federer, who went into the U.S. Open as the top men's player in the world, showed why during the fortnight on the hard courts of the National Tennis Center. What was scary was that Federer was probably not at the top of his game, but definitely at the top of the heap. When he needed a shot or a point, he pulled it off and became the first man in the Open Era to win both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in consecutive years.
The WTA Tour rankings don't show it, but Kim Clijsters is the best women's player at this time. She capped off a tremendous hard court summer by finally winning a Grand Slam tournament, and she did it easily.
