Recruiting Profile
Top Prospect: Matt Kandath

Matt Kandath's two-handed forehand is like a two-dollar bill - it's rarely encountered, but provides the value of more conventional methods. The 16-year-old from Gansevoort, New York accrued noteworthy results earlier this month at the U.S. Open junior championships and in the next few weeks will circulate the country, taking the official visits that will help determine his college choice.

"I've scheduled four visits," says Kandath, ranked sixth in the nation in the class of 2009. "First to the University of Virginia, then Duke, then Stanford and then Princeton.

"On paper, everything seems awesome at all four schools, so I'm really not sure how I'm going to narrow it down any more. It'll probably be a feel thing - the players, the team, how I feel about the coach, the other kids at the school."

Kandath, who turns 17 next month, has plenty of experience with the team aspect of tennis, winning the New York state boys singles title the past two years as a member of the Albany Academy squad.

"Playing high school tennis has given me a taste of the camaraderie you can have, even in tennis. It can boost your game, and it makes it a whole lot more fun, playing on a team."
