Special from Division III Tennis

May is the month for college tennis championships, and not just for the larger schools in NCAA Division I. Take a look at the titles that are up for grab this month:

• The final sixteen men's and women's teams in NCAA Division II are heading to Houston for the D2 National Championship Festival, which starts on Wednesday.
• The NCAA Division III men's championships start tomorrow at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.
• Eight women's teams will contest the D3 women's title starting tomorrow at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter, Minn.
• The NAIA Championships start today in Mobile, Ala. The men and women are all together in one place.
• The NJCAA women's championships finished this past Friday, with Hillsborough taking the Division I title and DuPage winning Division III. The men's championships start today in Plano, Tex.
• The California Community Colleges finished up their championship event on Saturday, with Ventura and Grossmont winning the men's and women's championships, respectively.

Although much of the focus is on the larger state schools of D1 tennis, the quality of tennis play in these other divisions can be quite high. Just this year, there are 36 recruits rated 4 Stars or better heading to a division outside of NCAA Division I.

Just like D1, these other divisions have dedicated fans. For D3 tennis, a recent website - the Division III Tennis Blog - has a large following of knowledgable followers.
