Georgia Tech Repeats as Women's National Indoor Champions

Neither a blizzard, a recent loss to Northwestern nor a 3-0 deficit to top seed Stanford could keep the Georgia Tech women from defending their title at the National Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis. The Yellow Jackets avenged their loss to the Wildcats with a 4-2 win Sunday, leaving the expansive icebox of the upper Midwest with the warmth of their third national team championship.

Over a foot of snow caused airport closures and expressways standstills, delaying 11 of the 16 teams invited to compete at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin. Once play began on Thursday however, it didn't take long for the first upset to be recorded, with unseeded North Carolina edging No. 2 seed UCLA 4-3 in the opening round.

The Tar Heels continued their clutch play in the quarterfinals, ousting No. 7 seed USC 4-3 when Laura Reichart won a third-set tiebreaker at No. 5 to put her team in the semifinals. But after two mentally and physically exhausting contests, North Carolina was no match for No. 3 seed Northwestern, who had put everyone on notice with a 6-1 win over NCAA champions and top-ranked Georgia Tech the previous weekend.

Although Georgia Tech, now seeded No. 4 after the Northwestern loss, had dominated in the first two rounds, it looked as if Stanford would gain revenge for the end of its NCAA-record 89 match winning streak at the hands of Georgia Tech in last year's Indoor semifinal. The Cardinal took a 3-0 lead over the Yellow Jackets in Saturday evening's semifinal, winning the doubles point and at No. 3 and 4 singles, while capturing the first set in three of the four remaining singles contests.
