Weinhold Rolls to Girls 18 Nationals Title
by
Alana Marcu, 17 August 2007
Last year's runner-up and this year's number two seed, Ashley Weinhold of Spicewood, Texas, prevails unscathed, not having dropped a set at the Girls 18 National Championship. "I'm hoping to win one more match," Weinhold said going into the tournament referring to both singles and doubles.
Weinhold had no trouble breezing through the singles draw as she posted consecutive victories of 6-2, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1, throughout the week.
"I felt really strong not dropping a set all week... that was good," said Weinhold.
In similar fashion, sixteenth seed and finalist Alison Riske of McMurray, Pennsylvania, faced only a few speed bumps en route to the final. Riske surrendered a set to Emily Gelber of Scarsdale, NY, in the round of 64, and knocked off number one seed Julia Cohen of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 6-1, 7-5 in the round of 16.
The same style of aggressive play that carried Riske to the final would be her downfall in it. Co-tournament director Andrea Norman said of Riske, "She came out really strong but made a lot of errors early on... Ashley turned it on after that."
Weinhold defeated Riske in front of the estimated 500+ crowd by a score of matching sets, 6-3, 6-3 to take the title and wild card entry to this year's US Open.
