U.S. Juniors Shine at Sun-Starved Wimbledon
by
Colette Lewis, 16 July 2007
After five days of weather disruptions, fresh adjectives for the persistent rain that marred the 2007 Wimbledon Junior Championships were hard to find. The tournament referee pronounced the situation "ghastly" and few juniors, some of whom waited for four days to step on the court, would argue.
But when the sun came out to stay on Friday, so did
Donald Young and
Madison Brengle, who became the first American boy and girl combination to reach the Wimbledon junior singles finals since Matt Anger and Zina Garrison took home the trophies in 1981.
Young, who won the boys title with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over top seed Vlad Ignatic of Belarus, and Brengle, who fell 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the final to Urszula Radwanska of Poland, played an exhausting schedule of singles and doubles matches in the final three days.
