The North Carolina Central University men’s tennis team has never needed any extra incentive to perform community service. Giving back is part of the university’s mission and ingrained in the program’s culture.

But being recognized for their good works couldn’t have come at a much more symbolic time. As the nation is roiled in protests over racism and social injustice issues, the HBCU program was named the national ITA Community Service Award winner for Division I men.

NCCU registered 556 hours of community service during the 2019-20 season. The Eagles participated in eight different community service efforts, spanning from hosting tennis clinics to building a house through Habitat for Humanity to cleaning up litter on the side of the highway.

“I am glad it happened this year, that way it brings more awareness to HBCUs and the tennis programs they have,” NCCU outgoing senior Brooks Campbell said. “Some kids are not aware of tennis at HBCUs, and I am proud of everything we do here and everything we stand for.”
