Commitment Announcement
Countdown: Sandberg Moves East to Ivy League
Share:

When it came time for Aaron Sandberg to begin his college search early on in his junior year, he set his sights high on a collegiate team. He looked at Ivy League schools such as Dartmouth, Pennsylvania, and Brown - as well as William and Mary, Xavier and other prestigious institutions.

With a second look at what Brown University had to offer, the Hudson, Ohio, 5-Star Recruit knew he had found the college for him. After an official visit and a chat with head tennis coach David Schwarz, Sandberg decided to commit to the Brown University Bears team this fall.

"Part of what drew me to Brown was the name itself," Sandberg said. "I knew I wanted to be in an Ivy League school, and Brown is a great school in every aspect. I really liked the coach, I felt like I connected with the team, and I like that they brought on new assistant coach Boris Bosnjakovic, who was the coach for Novak Djokovic and the Serbian Davis Cup team when they won the championship in 2010. I think it's a great place for me to develop my game more, and I'm excited to be a part of the Ivy League tradition - it's really something special."

As he looks forward to moving to Providence, Sandberg has a few goals in mind that he would like to achieve in the near future. One is to win the high school state singles championship, a title that is well within his reach after earning runner-up honors in 2013 and third place in 2012.

His other goal is to continue working on his game in preparation for stepping up to the next level of collegiate tennis. Armed with an attacking game style in which he finds ways to end points at the net, Sandberg claims that his finesse game is what he thinks will help him excel at the college level.

"I feel like my game is pretty solid all around, and I utilize all my shots, but finesse at the net is where I feel most confident," he said.

Growing up in a tennis-minded family - his father played for Bluffton University, his mother taught him how to play, his older sister plays for Lee University, and his younger sister Molly is a 4-Star freshman who was named second-team All-Ohio this past fall - Sandberg was a natural when it came to playing tennis. But it wasn't always his first sport of choice. Until he began playing tennis at the age of nine, Sandberg was mainly a baseball player, a foundation that he said helped him develop soft hands at the net.

It wasn't until one day while he was watching his sister play in a tournament that his competitiveness kicked in and prompted him to pick up a racquet.
