Countdown: Megan McCray to Oklahoma State
Share:

The Oklahoma State women's tennis coaches thought they had a hidden gem in Megan McCray.

They had watched her play all summer, and didn't think she was being recruited as aggressively as her talent warranted.

Oklahoma State head coach Chris Young planned to meet with McCray and her family during the USTA Girls 18-16 National Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

But after McCray embarked on a strong run in the tournament, Young began to worry McCray was no longer flying under the radar.

"We knew her success would bring more attention to her, but she was really receptive to what we had to offer," Young said. "We had them visit campus pretty shortly after, and things just moved quickly from there."

During her visit to Stillwater, McCray fell in love with the surroundings.

The blue-chip recruit from Oceanside, Calif., signed her letter of intent to become a Cowgirl last November.

"The coaching staff was really nice and the school atmosphere had a lot of spirit," McCray said. "They are really big into sports and I had a lot of fun attending the football game when I was there. I felt like it was the place I really wanted to go."

McCray, who won two national open events in 2012, is the third blue chip recruit to sign with Oklahoma State in the past three years.

"She is leaving California to come to Stillwater, Oklahoma, which is not something a lot of people would have anticipated when we signed her," Young said. "To have a top-ranked kid leave California to come across the country to Stillwater to play indoor tennis and other things, I think is definitely a big step for her and I think a sign our program has come a long way."
