College athletics offers an ever-changing landscape, and that landscape has had an impact on tennis. Conference realignment, Title IX, athletics budgets, recruiting, and increased USTA focus on college tennis have all been hot topics over recent years.

So... what are the implications of those changes? How has college tennis reacted? We put the following question to our panel of coaches:

Q) How is college tennis different today than it was ten years ago?

Some of the most striking changes in tennis revolve around the advances in technology that have affected everything we do on a day-to-day basis. Recruiting has been enhanced greatly by these advances, allowing coaches to "meet" with players overseas through venues like Skype. It allows coaches and players alike to get to know the other side and make a more informed decision about their future.

As for the sport itself, I believe there is a lot more depth in college tennis these days, as several of the Mid-Major programs are able to compete with the BCS schools on a regular basis. There have been some real breakthroughs in the college tennis scene, including Middle Tennessee State winning the NCAA Doubles national championship a few years ago. I think it gave some of the smaller programs some genuine hope that it is possible to succeed at the highest level.
