Bikes, Boats and Feet: Lee's Unique Journey to Richmond
Share:

Most players travel to practice every day in an automobile. Not Abby Lee (WTN 17.6). Her journey requires a golf cart or bike, a boat and her own two feet.

Lee resides on Daufuskie Island in South Carolina. She trains at Smith Stearns Academy, which is about six miles away in nearby Hilton Head.

Lee either takes a golf cart or a bike each morning to board a water taxi by 7:10 a.m. It’s about a 10-minute ride to shore, where she walks five minutes to the tennis courts.

In the afternoon, Lee returns home for school and then does the entire travel routine again to go back to Hilton Head for more practice and gym workouts

“We have thought about getting a jet ski,” Lee said. “I love jet skiing. I think it would be super cool to jet ski to practice.”

Lee’s commute won’t be quite as unique once she leaves for college. The five-star senior has committed to the University of Richmond. Lee wanted to find a school with strong academics and tennis.

“I had never really heard of Richmond. I definitely didn’t expect it from the start of everything,” Lee said. “But the coach reached out to me and was one of the college coaches I spoke with the longest. We had an hour-long conversation and he told me about his coaching style.”
