All the stars seemed to align out of nowhere for Jacklynka Scholten.
The four-star rising senior from Arlington, Virginia didn’t have the University of Toledo anywhere near her recruiting radar. She wasn’t even considering schools outside of the East Coast. But within the span of a few days, it seemed like she was destined to be there.

It all began when Scholten was deciding whether to play in a tournament in Grand Rapids, Michigan or Rome, Georgia in late May. Although she had never played in the state of Michigan before, Scholten chose Grand Rapids.
Her family opted to drive instead of fly to avoid any flight cancellations.
A week before they were scheduled to leave, Toledo head coach Tracy Mauntler reached out to Scholten letting her know she was going to be at the tournament and was interested in speaking with her.
Once Scholten told her mom, she learned her mom had booked a hotel room in Toledo as a stop on the trip. Scholten asked Mauntler if it would be possible to visit the campus since she would be so close.
Within a few hours, everything was arranged. Scholten and her mom spent nearly four hours at Toledo. They met Mauntler, members of the team and administrators at the university.
“It was the first school that I toured where there was not a single negative thing I could think about it,” Scholten said. “I saw other schools that were great schools, but there was always something. Like it was a great school, except for this one little thing. There was nothing like that with Toledo.”
