They fill a crucial role in every college program. They juggle multiple responsibilities and put in long hours behind the scenes. They arrive early to hit balls, they stay late to provide advice and they keep in contact with potential recruits.
They are assistant coaches.
Although they may not get as much attention as head coaches, they are highly valued by many.
In this edition of Meet The Assistant, we feature Georgia women’s associate head coach Drake Bernstein, who was a member of Georgia’s 2008 men’s national championship team.
Why did you get into coaching?
I was fortunate enough to be coached by two of the greatest coaches and people I’ve ever met, Manny Diaz and Will Glenn. They were (and still are) two of the most influential people in my life. They showed me how impactful a college coach can be during some of the most formative years of a student-athlete’s life, both athletically and personally. I want to give back the same way that they gave to me and my teammates.
What do you enjoy most about coaching?
I love getting to see our student-athletes go from point A to point B. One of the greatest rewards of coaching is seeing a person transform from their recruiting years to a college graduate and beyond. I enjoy being a part of that process daily and watching their growth play out.
