Jayanth Devaiah hesitated to contact some of the bigger college programs at the start of his recruiting process because his tournament results weren’t at the level he wanted.
As he started to improve, the five-star senior from Brookline, Massachusetts sent an email to Notre Dame. He didn’t hear back, so he emailed again right before Clay Courts last summer. The Irish coaches responded and came to watch a match.

“I had a great tournament and played really well and competed hard and I guess they liked what they saw,” Devaiah said. “The conversations started heating up a little more and I wanted to take a visit. It was definitely one of my top choices from the beginning considering the all-around aspect of the school.”
The mutual interest eventually led to an offer and Devaiah committed to play for Notre Dame. He plans to take a gap year after graduating from high school, and enroll at Notre Dame for the 2023-24 academic year.
Given the limited roster spots from the extra Covid year eligibility and his younger age, Devaiah believes his delayed arrival will work best for everyone.
“I just wanted to get stronger and get better,” said Devaiah, who doesn’t turn 18 until July. “I feel like I can definitely reach my full potential with more hard work and taking the gap year will help me. I will have more time to play ITF tournaments and travel more to events without worrying about school.”
