Logan Zapp was prepared to stay on the court and fight for the USTA Winter National Championship title as long as possible. He knew his opponent well, and knew the match wouldn’t be easy.

Overcoming some early missed opportunities, the top-seeded Zapp outlasted No. 8 Ben Shelton 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 6-4 in a battle of Floridians in the Boys 18s singles final last Friday at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Florida.
“It feels great. I grew up playing with Ben, and he’s one of my good friends. To play him in an L1 final was pretty special,” said Zapp, a blue-chip senior who has signed with North Carolina. “I am happy I won. It was a good start to 2020.”
Zapp and Shelton both had the energy to endure the long final after coming through with shorter semifinal wins. Shelton, a blue chip junior from Gainesville, defeated No. 4 Benjamin Koch of Abbeville, Louisiana 6-2, 6-1 while Zapp, a Fleming Island native, beat No. 12 Keshav Chopra of Marietta, Georgia 6-2, 6-3.
