In a month chock full of highlights, no fewer than seven juniors claimed their first Pro Circuit titles, and one earned her first WTA title. In Asia, the ITF’s Junior Finals and WTA Futures Stars provided showcases for young players, while two seniors claimed the first ITA Division I collegiate major of the season in matches televised on ESPNU.
Diane Parry
Parry started her Asian swing with a title at the ITF Grade A in Osaka, Japan, then kept right on rolling at the ITF Junior Finals in Chengdu, China. In a field of eight of the top players in the world, the 17-year-old from France went 5-0, winning her round robin group and continuing her impressive play the semifinals and final. In the final, Parry, one of the few juniors with a one-handed backhand, defeated Wimbledon girls champion Daria Snigur of Ukraine 6-3, 6-1, solidifying her hold on the No. 1 ITF World Junior ranking. Holger Rune
The 16-year-old from Denmark won the boys title at the ITF Junior Finals last week, and with that win has climbed to the No. 1 spot in the ITF World Junior rankings. The French Open boys champion barely survived in his round robin group, advancing via fewer number of games lost, despite a dropping his match to U.S. Open boys champion Jonas Forejtek. In the final, Rune defeated boys Osaka Grade A champion Harold Mayot of France 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-2.
