Establishing a dynasty in junior tennis team competition is much more difficult, with players aging out every two years, but the United States has now established a new standard of excellence in Junior Fed Cup, winning an unprecedented third straight title last week during the International Tennis Federation’s annual 16-and-under team competition with a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic.
The USTA’s National Campus was the site of the Junior Fed Cup and Junior Davis Cup competition this year, the first time the event has been in the United States in 25 years. Although the heat was so intense that it required suspension of play on one occasion, and the seasonal love bugs were consistently annoying, the six-day competition produced more than enough excitement to overcome those inconveniences.
Not only was the USA’s Junior Fed Cup title decided by a doubles match after a split of singles matches, but Japan’s 2-1 victory over the USA in the Junior Davis Cup final also went down to the wire.
