Five-star recruit Logan Zapp came into the 2018 USTA National Clay Court Championships with the goal of taking one match at a time, focusing on the task at hand and never looking ahead.
“That’s what I tried to do and it worked pretty well,” said the singles and doubles champion in Delray Beach, Florida.
In singles, he beat 2nd seeded New Yorker Ryan Fishback, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles, he and partner Alexander Bernard of Bonita Springs, Florida, were seeded 9th and upset the 3rd seeds Jeremie Casabon of Flourtown, Pennsylvania, and Hunter Heck of St. Paul, Minnesota, 6-2, 6-4.
Having grown up playing on clay in his hometown of Fleming Island, Florida, Zapp was at ease with the heat and humidity. He combined that with precision, focus and emotional control to help him earn not one, but both gold balls. In addition, Zapp was named Player of the Day in the last two days of the tournament.
