Due to my extensive coverage of the Easter Bowl and International Spring Championships, the 15 players featured as April Aces do not include those 12 champions, but rather focus on former collegiate players who are moving up the rankings, current juniors who are having success on the ITF Pro Circuit and young Americans who are making their mark on the USTA Pro Circuit. Congratulations to all those players who made April a month to remember.
Thiago Seyboth Wild
The 18-year-old from Brazil has concentrated on ITF Men’s Circuit events since last playing juniors at the Australian Open in January. Last month, he picked up his second pro singles title at the first $15,000 Futures of the year in his home country. The No. 6 seed, Seyboth Wild defeated No. 3 seed Rafael Matos and No. 1 seed Daniel Dutra Da Silva, both from Brazil, to reach the final, where he beat fellow teenager Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina 7-6(5), 6-3. Seyboth Wild didn’t drop a set all week while winning all three tiebreakers he played.
Saketh Myneni
The 30-year-old from India, who reached a career high of 137 back in 2016, lost most of last year to injury. The former University of Alabama star will see his ranking heading back up after last week, when he won the $25,000 Futures in Uzbekistan, his first title since 2015. Unseeded, Myneni defeated three seeds en route to the title, taking out No. 7 seed Yaraslav Shyla 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) in the final after trailing 3-0 in the third set.
Karue Sell
The former UCLA Bruin won his second Futures title of year last month at the $25,000 tournament in Little Rock, Arkansas. The unseeded 24-year-old from Brazil defeated top seed Kaichi Uchida of Japan in the quarterfinals and University of Florida recruit Sam Riffice in the semifinals to set up a championship match with former Ole Miss star Nik Scholtz of South Africa. Sell defeated the No. 5 seed 7-5, 6-2 to earn the third singles title of his pro career and move his ATP ranking at a career high of 417. (Photo credit: Michael Weinstein)
