Winter Nationals in the Desert
by Julie Wrege, 5 January 2006
The Arizona desert cities of Tucson and Phoenix hosted the USTA Winter Nationals last week. The weather during the entire week could not have been better - which was a welcome change from 2004 when monsoon-like rains arrived just in time for the Winter Nationals.
The draws were exceedingly strong this year, with each age division sporting several players ranked in the top ten. Also notable is the fact that four of the eight singles champions doubled up to take both the singles and doubles titles - and walked off with two of the coveted "gold balls."
