We talked to some of the top performers:

Natasha Kavarana (Mount Pleasant, South Carolina)

Natasha Kavarana posted a 9-2 singles record in March and rose from 230^th to No. 201 in the latest Tennis Recruiting Network rankings.

Kavarana won the Girls 16s consolation singles title at the L3 Georgia Open at Rome. Earlier, she reached the finals of the L4 Closed event at Jackson, Mississippi.

The 5-2 right-hander is currently a three-star player. With a little more progress, she could move into the four-star category.

“I felt it was much more important for me to have a much higher level of intensity and focus,” Kavarana said of her recent success. “I tried to put more hours on the court before and after school. As well as that, I am taking much better care of my body and have established a routine before and after I play.

“I attribute a lot of my success to time management. I have to start my days very early and end very late, and start my homework when I get home. I manage to get protein at every meal, and try to fuel my body with a good breakfast every morning.”

Kavarana trains with Randy Pate, Chris Cagle, and Martin Zumpft at the Randy Pate Tennis Academy in Mount Pleasant. Her coaches are putting her through the paces on her serve and working patterns.

“I would say I have an all-court game,” Kavarana explains. “But, I am primarily aggressive and like to take everything as early as I can. My biggest strengths are my backhand line and forehand inside-in.”

Her mom is Zarin Kavarana and her dad is Minoo Kavarana. Kavarana’s older brother, Sam, plays tennis at Davidson College. As a youngster, Kavarana traveled to her brother’s tournaments and became infatuated with the sport.

“Natasha has always been a hard worker,” her parents said. “She has started working even harder the past few months. She has put in more time on the courts, and her coaches have helped by making sure they hold practice when she is not in school.”

Kavarana is a sophomore at a magnet school, Charleston County School of the Arts. She is an honors student and is a member of the National Honor Society.

The versatile Kavarana attends a school which requires her to audition for a specific area of the arts. So, Kavarana chose musical theatre. She has been performing in shows since the age of 5 and spends time in school studying voice.

“Most people don’t think an athlete can be good at music, and vice versa,” her parents said. “She is successfully doing sports and music, with a lot of support from her coaches and teachers.”
