We talked to a few of these top performers:

Quincy Jones (Hamden, Connecticut)

Three-star rising sophomore Quincy Jones credits his recent growth to a big decision he made for his game back in 2019. He decided to move to Florida for his freshman year of high school to train with coach Madeleine Sanchez-Petel while attending school online.

“I spent 10 months training in Florida with three other kids, all of whom are older and forced me to practice at a higher level,” Jones said. “I also started training with a coach I had when I was seven years old. She really believes in my potential and holds me to a high standard.”

Over these months, Sanchez-Petel taught Jones the importance of a strong mental game.

“I am working a lot on the mental side of the game, including focus and maintaining a high competitive level for an entire match,” Jones said. “I am also working on visualizing what I want to have happen during practices and matches, which helps me center myself and my game.”

Jones described himself as an offensive baseline player with the goal of becoming an all-court player.

“I have a strong backhand and can cover a lot of court,” he said. “My athleticism and speed distinguish me from other players. I can run down almost every shot, aided by my ability to change direction quickly.”

The Hamden, Connecticut native made the decision to return home for the summer, and he and Sanchez-Petel set some new goals.

“We agreed that I needed to focus on my attitude, my ability to be more consistent, hitting more high-percentage shots and working to get my opponent off balance, all of which has helped me be more successful,” Jones said.

It is fair to say that these goals came to fruition when Jones returned to Connecticut and began competing again. He managed to squeeze in five tournaments in just a month since he returned to competitive play in July. Highlights of his last month of tennis include winning the L5 Madison Summer Challenge in early July and reaching the finals of the L5 Guilford Tournament just days later.
