Coaching Roundtable
Countdown: The Value of Video in Recruiting
Share:

As technology has improved, video has become a tool that players and coaches have utilized at different levels in recruiting.

Players post video of practices and matches on websites or directly send video to college coaches.

We put the following question to a number of coaches:

Q) How much do you use video of players in recruiting? If a player creates a video, what should it include?

Alison Ojeda, University of Tennessee women

“One-hundred percent of the time I have access to a video, I use it. As coaches, our eyes tend to pick up on things that we want (and don't want) to see. We have many great tools at our fingertips now. Tennis Recruiting allows us to get the information we need to begin the recruiting process with players, UTR gives us an accurate comparison of The level of competition, and most importantly, video is what ultimately answers most questions we have.

As fun as a highlight reel is with exciting music, it unfortunately does not show 90% of what we are looking for at Tennessee. When I watch players recruiting videos, I am less concerned with drilling and more concerned with watching matchplay. An unedited video is always preferred so we can get a real accurate understanding of the recruits game. I want to see more than just forehands and backhands. I want to see how energetic a player is, how they handle stress and pressure, how focused the players are from start to finish of an entire game...I want to know how they handle their emotions on the court and I definitely want to be able to close the video knowing whether the players is a problem solver or not.
