The University of Maryland, has announced it will eliminate eight sports teams from its athletic department. The reason given by the University of Maryland, College Park: money troubles. Terrapin student-athletes playing on teams such as men's tennis, women's swimming and indoor/outdoor track, to name a few, will continue to receive scholarship assistance for their remaining time at Maryland but will have to go elsewhere if they wish to satisfy their competitive edge. The cuts are immediate and will reduce the total number of sports from 27 to 19.
Ross Greenstein from Scholarship for Athletes sat down with Maryland men's tennis coach Kyle Spencer, and asked him about the unfortunate situation.
Questions and Answers
Scholarship For Athletes (SFA): Will the team complete their season this spring?
Kyle Spencer (KS): Yes our team will be able to compete as normal for the spring semester. This year's schedule is the toughest it has ever been at Maryland.
SFA: What are your goals for the team this year?
KS: Our specific team goals stay within our team and are not public, but overall we want to make a deep run at the NCAA's and do things that have never been done at Maryland and exceed what we were able to accomplish last year in our historic season.
SFA: Has each player been granted a release to speak to other schools?
KS: Yes, each player has been released to talk with other schools.
