Roundtable: Fitness Programs in College Tennis
Share:

Fitness and health are important aspects in the game of tennis. Off the court, college tennis players work out to maintain high levels of energy and stamina. We put the following questions to a panel of college tennis coaches:

Q) What types of off-court fitness and conditioning programs do you use? Are your players advised on nutritional matters?

Frank Barnes, head coach, Wisconsin-Whitewater Men and Women

At UW-Whitewater, we are lucky to have a strength and conditioning staff who works with all of our sports programs. Our strength and conditioning coach is Lee Munger. We do two days a week of conditioning/agility work and two days of lifting/core. During the lifting sessions, we focus quite a bit on flexibility and injury prevention - using bands and dowels - in addition to the typical lifting exercises.

Coach Munger cycles the routines based upon the time of year and the intensity of the competition. In the off-season, the strength and conditioning coach provides voluntary workouts for the players to do during optional practices run by the captains.

Gordie Ernst, head coach, Georgetown Men and Women

We have a strength and conditioning coach who handles all areas of off-court fitness. We do not have a nutritionist per se, but our strength coach works in this area as well.
