Spring Signing Week '16: Guns Up for Jackson Cobb
Share:

Texas Tech coach Brett Masi grabbed himself an old school commitment when he convinced Jackson Cobb to leave Austin for Lubbock.

Jackson Cobb has committed to Texas Tech
The first thing you notice about Cobb when you speak with him has nothing to do with tennis. He has impeccable manners. He's a yes sir, no sir kind of kid - and I say kid with the utmost in respect. The bottom line is he's a throwback.

Cobb is also traditional in the sense that he attends a brick and mortar school, James Bowie High School, in Austin, Texas.

Case in point. When asked about his practice regimen, Cobb responded, "I try to play 4-5 times a week, but it's tough because I may have math or physics homework."

He humbly downplays the academics, but as a former math teacher myself, I dug in and discovered that he is in the Honor Society and also takes BC Calculus (for the BC Adavanced Placement exam in May) and Physics II.

"Driving home from a tournament," says Cobb, "I am more concerned about having a math or science test on Monday than how I lost."

This traditionalist view extends to his game where he plays an aggressive style of tennis.

"I have a strong serve and a descent forehand," adds Cobb. "I'm tough from the baseline but definitely not afraid to come to net. My game is really malleable, and I can play any type of style. I can stay out there for three or more hours - or I can hit three winners a game."

The recruiting process was a quick one for Cobb, who grew up a Longhorns fan in Austin.

He was originally considering Air Force, Boise State and hometown Division II power St. Edward's, but he had also been in contact with former Tech Coach Tim Seigel before his retirement.
